Hold luggage—sometimes known as checked baggage—refers to larger bags and luggaeg that are stored in an aircraft’s cargo hold during a flight. Passengers drop off their hold luggage at the check-in desk and retrieve it at baggage claim on the other side.

You’re typically allowed to pack essentials like clothing, toiletries and electronics in your hand luggage, but it’s always best to check your airline’s up-to-date restrictions, paying particular attention to size and volume restrictions on liquids.

As a general rule of thumb, dangerous or illegal items and substances, such as sharp objects, flammable materials, and certain liquids, are forbidden. Always check specific guidelines to avoid issues at security.
