The Ned, Nomad
Lording it over the cloud-poking Johnston Building on arterial Broadway, The Ned NoMad combines Art Deco glamour with a modern members’ club, 167 tempting bedrooms and a fleet of dining options, including an outpost of Cecconi’s. Late nights are guaranteed at Little Ned: a drinking den with an enticing cocktail menu, tasty nibbles and plenty of sartorial swagger.
Members enjoy a host of exclusive-access perks, including a buzzing rooftop terrace, the place to be when the sun shines down on the city, and the downstairs Atrium, where live music draws a cool crowd. Bonus points for the hotel’s impressive art collection, featuring more than 300 works by the the crème de la crème of NYC’s art scene.
Ace Hotel, Brooklyn
Bed down at the intersection to basically everything at Ace Hotel Brooklyn, perched in Boerum Hill, on the edge of Downtown Brooklyn. Flaunting Ace’s trademark cool-kid style, rooms are touted as ‘city-born cabins’ for creative types, decorated with pops of forest-green, functional-but-stylish plywood furniture, exposed concrete and warehouse windows revealing city views (especially if you splurge on a higher category).
As usual with Ace, the lobby is a breath-stealing affair, boasting artworks galore and public workspaces attracting a modish, laptop-wielding crew. Enjoy nibbles and caffeine courtesy of the pastry and coffee bar, and share globe-trotting small plates at As You Are. There’s also a gym you’ll actually want to use, thanks to a fruitful collab with hip athleisure brand Yeah, I Work Out.
The Hoxton, Williamsburg
The Hoxton’s first Stateside outpost has found a happy home in NYC: in the heart of hipster Williamsburg to be precise, beloved by artists, musicians, chefs and discerning visitors. Channelling the artsy spirit of its ’hood, The Hoxton, Williamsburg has plenty of treats in store, including 175 velvet-and-brass-adorned bedrooms, the rooftop Laser Wolf grill house from chef Michael Solomonov, and K’Far Cafe, Solomonov’s loving tribute to his Israeli hometown. Expect coffee, cocktails and everything in between: bourekas, bagels, cinnamon walnut babka, Tunisian salad, za’atar brick chicken and Persian lamb shank, for example.
Freehand New York, Flat Iron
If walls could talk, we’d listen to these ones: Freehand New York occupies the former George Washington Hotel, which has lured many famous – and infamous – writers, musicians and creatives through its doors. Swish good looks come courtesy of Roman and Williams and talented Bard College students and alumni, responsible for the custom-commissioned stash of artworks. You could feasibly spend your entire NYC stay here, thanks to the impressive food and drink options, including award-winning Latin American treats at Comodo restaurant, light bites, coffee and cakes from Smile To Go café, and innovative cocktails at Broken Shaker rooftop bar or swish, candlelit Bar Calico.
Pendry Manhattan West
Pendry Manhattan West boldly transports the sun-soaked style of coastal California to the newly fashionable Manhattan West district, home to the redeveloped Empire Station/Penn Station Complex, destination dining, independent boutiques and peaceful parks such as the High Line. Gachot Studios conceived the bedrooms’ understated decor: all neutral hues and caramel-coloured wood furnishings, enlivened with hits of rose, ruby and peach. Expect an around-the-clock array of dining options, spanning breakfasts at the Garden Room or Vista Lounge, Eastern Mediterranean-inspired feasts at Zou Zou’s, and cocktails at Chez Zou or Bar Pendry. Fitness fans will appreciate the 24/7, 1,700sq ft Fitness Center and Movement Studio, where TechnoGym equipment, Peloton bikes and yoga mats await.
